Starfruit aims to bridge the real world with virtual worlds. All services aim to keep virtual and real friends connected. They were the first to introduce e-commerce in Second Life.

In addition, Starfruit offers virtual phone booths which allow users to send SMS text messages from Second Life to their real life friend’s mobile phones.

History

Starfruit started as a venture at Swisscom Innovations with the vision of bridging virtual worlds like Second Life with the real world.

In May 2007 Starfruit placed a few virtual telephone booths in Second Life. From these booths users in Second Life can send free SMS text messages to mobile phones anywhere in the world. In addition it is possible to teleport (beam) from one telephone booth to another to discover new and interesting places in Second Life. The telephone booths are free so interested users can take a virtual copy and place it on their land. The viral marketing effect started immediately, now there are over 500 virtual telephone booths placed by the community all over Second Life.

In July 2007 Starfruit opened its first real product shop. Users can send real gifts from Second Life to real life. They can also buy products for themselves. So, a Second Life user buys a virtual flower or chocolates in a Starfruit shop. These he can then give to his girlfriend in Second Life. Then she can redeem the gift and will receive the flowers / chocolates delivered by our partners to her real life home. For the first time it is possible to send real gifts from Second Life...

In September 2007 we placed other products on sale including jewelry and Wenger watches.
In December 2007 we became partners with Giveawine and now offer wine and scotch whisky and prosecco.
In February 2008 we extended our Wenger product range to include Wenger pocket knives.
In April 2008 we launched our tshirt products - now users can wear the same tshirt in Second life as it real life buying products through the Starfruit shop - partner Homeshirt.

A Starfruit tem recebido muitas respostas positivas inclusive atenção da mídia, um espaço na televisão suíça, artigos reais de jornais, no jornal virtual Avastar, notas em blogs do mundo real, referências em conferências e opiniões da comunidade virtual.

Em abril de 2008 a Starfruit tornou-se uma das 100 finalistas da Red Herring.
